Although most of my Christmas days out and plans have been put on hold due to Omicron, I made a little detour whilst in Gothenburg the other day, to have a wander around the old town. Haga is a charming part of Gothenburg with traditional wooden buildings and cobbled streets.
It is also home to 17th century one-time fortress and prison, Skansen Kronan.
#winterscenes #haga #gothenburg #fortress #skansenkronan #oldtown The Haga district is Gothenburg’s oldest suburb, dating back to 1648. A hardcore hippie hang-out in the 1960s and '70s, its cobbled streets and vintage buildings now host a variety of cafes and boutiques. During some summer weekends and at Christmas, store owners set up stalls along the neighbourhood's main strip, turning the street into one big market. The pedestrian street Haga Nygata is lined with well-preserved houses, many in the characteristic Gothenburg style called “landshövdingehus” with one floor in brick and the rest in wood.

Candlelit cafes with terraced courtyards create a bohemian vibe and the area is dotted with vegan bistros and bakeries known for their cinnamon buns.
You'll also find boutiques selling everything from soap to marzipan, tea to olive oil. There's an independent toy store and a local chocolate maker, an interior decorator, fashion, antique and spice shops. In other words, something for everyone!
If you're not there for the retail therapy, walking up and down the narrow streets sightseeing will no doubt work up an appetite and luckily there are numerous eateries catering to all tastes.
If you're like me and have a sweet tooth, Sweden's fika culture will suit you down to the ground!
I'd heard about these ginormous cinnamon buns and went about searching for Café Husaren, inventors of the plate sized Haga bun. 😋

This beautiful grade listed building is popular with locals and tourists alike and has a wide range of sandwiches, quiches and cakes. It was lovely to soak up the atmosphere and people watch for a while. The snow on the ground adding to the Christmassey spirit. 🎄❄️🎅🏻
Once you feel like you’ve done Haga, with half a million yearly visits, Liseberg Amusement Park is Sweden’s most popular Christmas market and not to be missed. No wonder. It is a truly magical place for all ages, especially during the coldest months when the entire park is transformed into a beautiful winter wonderland. Here, you can dine at the high quality restaurants, tell Santa what you want for Christmas and go on the winter-open carousels and roller coasters. 🎢 🎠

A perfect way to get into the Christmas spirit is to visit a Gothenburg Christmas market! There are so many to choose from so you're certain to find a favourite. 😍
Just don't forget to taste the glögg, Sweden's answer to mulled wine and if you can fit it after the day's "fika", buy some pepparkakor and lussekatter to fill a corner 😋😉
Wrap up warm and enjoy light installations, markets, events and concerts in this beautiful West Coast Swedish city.
