If you’re ever passing through Abuja in Nigeria, make sure you swing by Zuma Rock.
The journey is about 45minutes each way from the Transcorp Hilton Abuja.
First named Zumwa meaning ‘The place of catching guinea fowls’ in the 15th century by the Zuba people, you can see why it was so named. There are still many species of birds living there even to this day.
This enormous monolith is free to explore however, donations are accepted to ascend to the top.
You are guaranteed an epic climb on this 725 metre vertical rock. Unfortunately it was raining the day we visited so it wasn’t advisable. Instead we pulled up at the roadside to shop for some of the freshest fruit we have ever tasted or even seen.
The fascinating feature of Zuma is the naturally etched face in the rock. It is meant to look almost human like but since our driver Tony Udeh mentioned the resemblance of a Capuchin monkey, we can’t get it out of our heads! If you can’t see the resemblance, the small dark thumbnail could be the monkey‘s face and then 2 paws in front.
Some locals believe this is a deity, governing and protecting their community.
It’s an amazing sight to behold and we feel lucky work took us there! We’d love a proper tour of this surprising country and if you’re in the area and want to see this marvel, you won’t be sorry.
The round trip from the hotel costs around 15,000 Nigerian Naira or U$26 and as mentioned earlier it’s free to explore but kindly pay a token to climb to the top.
